Iris Identification: What Jurors Need to Know
Understanding Forensics
Forensic science plays an important role in modern criminal investigations by using scientific methods to help determine what may have happened in a case (Vo, 2026). One example is iris pattern analysis, a form of biometric identification that uses the unique patterns in a person’s eye to help confirm their identity. As technology advances, this type of evidence is becoming more common in forensic contexts (NIJ, 2026).

Attention Jurors!
As a juror, your role is to carefully evaluate the evidence presented in court and make a fair, unbiased decision based on the facts. Jurors are responsible for listening to expert testimony, assessing the reliability of scientific evidence, and determining how much weight it should carry in a case. This can be challenging, especially when dealing with complex forensic technologies that may seem highly accurate or difficult to question.

This website is designed to help jurors better understand iris pattern identification, including how it works, when it is used, and its strengths and limitations. By learning about this technology, jurors can make more informed decisions and avoid common misunderstandings about forensic evidence.
“In the courtroom, understanding the science behind the evidence is just as important as the evidence itself.” (Khanna & Resnik, 2021)
